INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY IN FISHING THROUGH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

THE COMPANY

Founded in 2002, TASA is a leading Peruvian fishing company in the production of high-quality, value-added marine ingredients and foods that operate in harmony with the community and the environment. Belonging to the Breca Group, a diversified business conglomerate with over 130 years of history and operations in Peru, Chile, and Brazil, it is the world's largest producer and exporter of fishmeal and fish oil and one of the main suppliers of refined fish oil and Omega 3 concentrated fish oil.

THE CHALLENGE

Detecting anchovy shoals posed a significant challenge for TASA. The process required multiple third-party software tools and manual analysis by a team of oceanographers, who could only review about 10% of the data generated by the echosounders. This analysis was only possible once the ships returned to shore, and even then, the sheer volume of data made full manual review inefficient and highly costly.

THE SOLUTION

Consolidating its commitment to sustainability, ocean conservation, and the environment, TASA sought to innovate its anchovy fishing process by incorporating Artificial Intelligence to optimize trips and prevent the capture of other species
In close collaboration with TASA’s team, Baufest designed and implemented an end-to-end solution that processes and interprets raw sonar images captured by marine echosounders, generating detailed echograms. Using advanced AI algorithms, the system identifies the location and characteristics of anchovy shoals, enabling more efficient and sustainable trip planning.

Key features include:

  • Automatic detection of shoals from echosounders installed on fishing vessels.
  • Secure and efficient transmission and storage of data from vessels to a centralized Azure-based infrastructure using encrypted protocols.
  • A user interface for real-time detection visualization, including comparisons between model predictions and expert annotations.
  • Advanced filtering and search by date, season, vessel, and trip.
  • Role-based access control with Administrator and Viewer permissions.

.

BENEFITS

  • High-accuracy automatic detection of anchovy shoals directly onboard.
  • Reduced navigation time and shorter offshore stays for crews.
  • Improved fishing forecasts, enabling more informed and strategic business decisions.
  • Operational savings through lower fuel consumption.
  • Reduced environmental impact, with a significant decrease in carbon footprint and bycatch of non-target species.
